The Rex cat… hypoallergenic?

Published by petlvt under Cats Edit This

Have you heard someone claim that a Rex cat is hypoallergenic?

Actually, latest research shows that up to 25% of Rex cats are surrendered to new homes and rescue organizations because people with cat allergies bought them thinking they were hypoallergenic. True, they are a breed which produce less allergens than some other breeds. However, there is no such thing as a non-allergenic cat. About 10% of people with cat allergies claim to be able to tolerate the Rex breed. Not a very substantial percentage.

FYI: female cats tend to produce more allergens than males, and kittens less than males. So if tolerating a new Rex kitten, over time it may not be tolerated. If you can’t resist cats the way I can’t, and your allergies aren’t too severe, I would speak to your doctor about allergy injections or medications to help control this problem if possible.
